Troubleshooting

Slideshow is showing on the Laptop and not the Projector (or vice versa)

Always turn on the Projector and hook the video cable to the laptop BEFORE turning the Laptop on. This will ensure that the Laptop will detect the Projector and send the video signal to the Projector.

Now if you can see the slide on the Projector (actually the screen in front where the Projector is projecting) but you can't see it on the Laptop, then relax. At the very worst you'll have to look at the screen to see the slide. If you feel adventuresome, you can try to get the display on the Projector/Screen AND the laptop.

(I say adventuresome because the Laptop may not cooperate and you may end up with the slide showing ONLY on the laptop. Not a good thing. At that point, if you've tried all of the steps listed below without success, you'll have to restart the Laptop -- which may be unacceptable in the middle of a class.)

So you've decided to try to toggle the display. Here's how:

1. Locate the Function Key on your keyboard. It is most often in the bottom left corner of the keyboard, labeled Fn in a blue or red  (or other) color.

2. Now look at the top row of keys (labeled F1 thru F12) -- these keys are often called Function Keys, but the Function Key I mentioned in #1 is a single, color-labeled key). On some of the keys, see small symbols in the same color as the Function Key. The key you want has a little picture of a monitor (rectangle with rounded corners ). For sake of argument, let's say the Monitor Toggle Key is the F5 key.

3. Press and Hold the Fn key. Now press the Monitor Toggle Key (F5) once and then release Fn key.

4. The Fn-Monitor Toggle Key (F5) toggles the laptop between three states:

Every time you press the Fn-Monitor Toggle Key (F5) the Laptop transitions to the next of the three states.

5. Wait for the Laptop to complete the transition to the next state. If nothing happens, press the Fn-Monitor Toggle Key (F5) again. If nothing happens when you press the then there is a possible problem between the resolution of the Laptop and the Projector. If this happens, then you will just need to use the Projector display alone.

6. If the Projector is not showing the slide and you can't toggle back to the Projector, then:

BMRA CD Doesn't AUTOSTART:

  1. When you insert a BMRA Tools CD into the CDROM drive and close the door, it should autostart, meaning that the main page should automatically open in a very short while.

  2. If it does not, you can start the main page as follows:
    a.  Open Windows Explorer by Right-Clicking on the [Start] button and choosing [Explore].
    b.  In the left pane of Windows Explorer, click on the CDROM drive.  (usually labeled Drive D:)
    c.  Move down to the proper directory (see specific locations by CDROM tool below)
    d.  Find the file named index.htm or index.html
    e.  Double-left click the file to launch the main page.

  3. Startup file locations for BMRA Tools CDs:
    a.  BMRA Intermediate Contract Pricing CD: The index.htm file in the the top-most directory.
    b.  BMRA PBSC 7-Step CD: The index.htm file is located in the top-most directory.
    c.  BMRA Market Research CD: The index.html is located in the \MKTRSRCH\ directory.

The Laptop won't turn off

  1. When you are shutting down the Laptops from the BMRA Computer Lab, the "Windows is shutting down" screen appears and the Laptop can appear to be completely hung.

  2. This happens with some of the Operating System on a few laptops.

  3. To shut down the Laptop, press and hold the power button for 3-4 seconds, until the Laptop turns off.

  4. When you restart this Laptop, it will automatically scan the hard drive to make sure there were no problems when it was shut down that way.

  5. If this Laptop persists in not shutting down, choose Shutdown, Restart from the Start Menu. Then when the computer screen goes black, press the power button to turn off the PC and prevent reboot hard-drive scan repercussions.
